“Bass was one of Motown sound’s biggest selling points for me. Players such as James Jamerson, who was incredibly good. Motown was a bass player’s paradise because they’d actually found a way to record the bass so that you could hear every note. The Motown bass players were just unbelievable—I think that some of the Motown records used to end up as sort of concertos for the bass guitar. I’ll never forget when I first heard “I Was Made to Love Her” by Stevie Wonder. The bass on the record was incredible… and that’s coming from the sort of person who really listens to the bass parts.”
